Homer Has a New Home
June 2008
Homer has been moved to his "forever home." He was moved on Sunday, June 1st. He went to a nice home of a lady who will spoil him rotten. This lady currently has a potbellied pig and wanted a "friend" for her existing potbellied pig. The lady recently had an older potbellied pig that passed away, so she knows all about potbellied pigs, what they need and what they like. Here is the report from Kelley, who transported Homer to his new home:
"Homer arrived safe and sound to his new home in Newport Beach. He has his own little area outside the office door with grass and shade and he has his pick of five doggie beds. He walked out of the carrier - walked right into her office and checked it all out. Then he walked down the hallway and checked out the rest of the house and went into her bedroom and decided he liked this bed the best. We let him take a short nap while we did her other pig Wilber's hooves, then woke him up and herded him back to his area. Sharon wants him to get settled before meeting all the dogs and Wilber. Sharon called me last night to tell me that he ate his dinner and went back to sleep. He did wake up and was a little disoriented, so she sat next to him and petted him until he went back to asleep. I will keep you posted. ~ Kelley"
A BIG THANK YOU TO KELLEY, ROSALINDE, SUEY, DR. KANFER, CORNELIA, AND NOW SHARON, WHO HAS CARED SO MUCH FOR HOMER'S PROGRESS SINCE HE WAS RESCUED. AND TO ALL OF HOMER'S DONORS--WE COULD NOT HAVE PAID OFF HOMER'S VET BILL WITHOUT YOU!!! Homer will have a few future medical expenses, such as final x-rays to make sure his lungs are back to full functioning capacity, etc. We will update you when he has those x-rays. Thanks for taking time to read and care about Homer. He is one special sweet piggy, for sure!! ~ Peggy
Here are photos of Homer in his new digs. As you can see, he made himself right at "home!"

Homer Update 3-31-2008
Thanks Everyone....I'm sorry I haven't put an update on the "Homer Blog" in a few days, but I have had sooooooo much to get caught up on here!!! Just to let ya know, we have raised a little over $1100. The total bill was $1900+something, so we still need around $800 to finish off the payment, which we need to pay within 30 days!! PLEASE HELP US reach the payoff. Any extra that comes in will go towards prescriptions that Homer still needs and his special treats (he LOVES fruits, especially grapes). :o)
We got Homer out of the hospital last Thursday (March 27th) and he is in foster care until a family in Newport Beach can take him permanently the end of April. His breathing is still labored, he is still trying to cough up all the gunk that's built-up in his lungs, and he is still on meds, which he does not like and is starting to refuse! But he is doing a little better (actually a lot better than a couple of weeks ago, thanks to the excellent care by Dr. Kanfer and her vet staff!!!!!), he is still not eating much, but making himself right at home in his new foster home. Poor guy, the stress of being moved so many times within the last two months has been so hard on him because he had been in the same yard, with the same family for 10+years -- before we found him being attacked by those rottweilers!! Just the uncertainty of not knowing whether he will be moved again, and when, has to be stressful on him.

What Caused the Pneumonia??
I don't know exactly what caused the pneumonia. Homer lived outside all his life, in a run-down shack in a big yard in Carbon Canyon. The shack was missing most of three sides, therefore not keeping Homer safe from the winds and cold, it was filled with JUNK, and he didn't have any blankets for the winter, nor a swimming pool for the summer (until Rosalinde found him and took such things to him during this last year). He had a nice big yard to roam in.

When Rosalinde found him, his tusks were so overgrown that they were growing back into the sides of his face. We got the owners to agree to let Kelley come out and trim Homer's tusks. He's a very active pig and would run up and down that hill like nothing when we tried to capture him and flip him for the trimming :o) .After the tusks were trimmed, there were huge bleeding infected "holes" in the sides of Homer's face.

Although neglected, he was safe in his nice huge yard......UNTIL the fence at the top of the hill blew down, due to strong winds, and the owner would not fix the fence, therefore allowing the rottweilers to have access to Homer's yard and to Homer!!! Rosalinde noticed this because she'd stop by two or three times a week to visit Homer and take him treats. One day, she stopped by to give Homer treats and she actually witnessed the dogs keeping Homer prisoner in his run-down shack.

When Homer tried to come out to greet Rosalinde (which he always did), the dogs actually chased and attacked Homer, biting him!! That's when Rosalinde talked to the owners and got the owners to agree to release Homer to us (evidentially this had happened several times in the past and the owner had done nothing to stop these attacks - we know, because Homer's ears are all torn up, obviously from dog bites). As a result of seeing these dog attacks, Rosalinde, her fiance-Andreas, Kelley and myself, went to rescue Homer from this "torment" and took him to Little Orphan Hammies. Suey(at Little Orphan Hammies) loved Homer and Homer got along just great with all the other pigs there, even tho he had never been around another pig since he was a piglet (Kelley figures Homer to be about 14 years old now). Here's how Homer let Suey get right in his face for loving.

The only thing that was different when he went to Little Orphan Hammies is that Suey gives all her pigs "hay" to nest in........could it have been an allergy to hay??? Could he already have had been developing pneumonia when we rescued him (because according to the x-rays, he had a collapsed lung and his lungs were FILLED with fluid...which we are told does not happen overnight). He was only at Little Orphan Hammies a few short weeks when Suey noticed Homer was not eating and was breathing hard and wheezing. Since Suey knows of no good pbp vets up there, we brought Homer back down here to an EXCELLENT vet hospital in Monrovia. If anyone needs an excellent vet, this vet is highly recommended ... and she treats potbellied pigs, which is difficult to find. Dr. Kanfer, and her vet staff, has been excellent, so compassionate, and so caring for Homer. He is on the road to recovery, thanks to those that rescued Homer and to Dr. Kanfer!! Now we must pay Dr. Kanfer for her services....somehow!!!!!! Here's photos of Homer at the vet (Kelley and Dr. Kanfer with Homer, Rosalinde & Andreas with Homer)

Homer is such a sweet pig, he has let the vet & Kelley work on him, insert IV's, take temperature, x-rays, poke him here and there with needles, and never complained (well, only when he had to be lifted up onto the x-ray table). For several days before, and after he was admitted (which was on March 15th), he had not eaten or gone potty. Finally I think around March 21st, he started eating on his own and went potty!!! He is still breathing hard and trying to cough up the build-up that's in his lungs, but he is on the road to recovery...THANKS TO DR. KANFER AND HER VET STAFF AND TO SCAMPP MEMBERS .....

Hello, my name is Homer, aka "the Carbon Canyon Pig". My article was just recently featured inside the March newsletter for SCAMPP! For those that didn't have the chance to read my sad " Story", I was recently moved from my old home of nine years because my original owners did NOT care that their two vicious Rottweilers continually attacked me! I wear the scars on my ears and neck as a reminder of my "neglected" old home! The kind and caring people from SCAMPP were nice enough to take me to a Sanctuary up in Solvang, which is about three hours away from Chino Hills. I LOVED my new home. I made lots and lots of piggie friends, had a warm cozy bed of hay and straw at night and had a lot of land to roam during the day. Unfortunately I contracted Pneumonia somehow and got very, VERY ill over the last week or so, in fact I thought I was going to die...my temperature went down to 94.3 degrees and my breathing became very labored. I didn't want to move because I felt so tired and sluggish, in fact I stopped eating for three days already, FIRST sign of a serious problem in pigs as everybody knows how us piggies LOVE to eat:) THANKFULLY the nice people from SCAMPP love me so much and gave me yet another chance at live! They drove again THREE hours just to come get me and then drove another THREE hours all the way back to Monrovia where I was immediately admitted to an Emergency Veterinary Clinic, called "Dr. Domotor's Animal House". My Vet and her staff have been so very nice to me, they quickly gave me the emergency care I needed to stay alive. Kelley and Peggy and Andreas and Rosalinde were there, too! I was so happy to have them all there with me, praying for the best:) They gave me an IV drip immediately because I was very dehydrated. Then they poked my ear several times to get a vein in order to draw blood which was ok because I knew they love me so much and wanted me to live! The results showed that my white blood cell count was VERY high, showing signs of a serious infection! Then I had to get X-Rays for the Vet to determine what was wrong with me, as to why I had such a hard time breathing. Turns out my left lung had partially collapsed due to the advanced stage of Pneumonea! I am told to be the very first piggie to have been diagnosed with a collapsed lung! Yikes!!! Talk about clinging on to life! I thought I was going to my new home by now (though I heard we're still looking for that, too) but I am still in the Hospital. I am still being monitored on a daily basis by my caring Vet Sari Kanfer and loving Kelley since my breathing has not yet improved as much as they were hoping it to be by now. And I also am still not eating on my own! Kelley has been such a sweetheart and boy does she have a lot of patience, she has been having to "force feed" me since I checked into the Hospital. She wants me to get well quick! I know my Emergency Care won't be cheap, in fact I know that it will be VERY expensive as I've been here since Saturday(March 15th)!!! I am asking you to PLEASE help with just a little donation to help pay my Vet Bill! Any amount is very appreciated, it can be as little as $5 or $10, I will forever be very grateful! I don't think I deserved another chance at live as SCAMPP has done so much for me already! If it wasn't for SCAMPP, my voice would have never been heard!!! And I would've crossed the Rainbow Bridge! THANK YOU to "Dr. Domotor's Animal House" for being so accommodating and compassionate!!! And THANK YOU for reading my story! Please keep your fingers and hooves crossed for my speedy recovery!!! I love you!!!
